Doing promo work is kind of strange to me.
There’s a part of me that thinks that it’s cool to try and expand on my normal things. I realize that I’m just starting out and I don’t really have my own style or expertise or anything of that nature, so I try and do a little bit of everything. As most people know there are certain things that pay more than other things. There’s no shame to it, that’s just the way the cookie crumbles sometimes.
But most times, in most situations you have to show that you’re capable of performing the job required for people to pay you. I know that I wouldn’t want someone to do something for me without knowing that they’re at least partially capable of doing what I absolutely need them to do. So when I do personal shoots,(for free, mostly. Although that’s changing come December… EVERYBODY’S PAYING.), “practice shoots” I do them the way that I want to. I experiment with pictures and withhold the ones that I don’t want to represent me and things of that nature.
It’s not that I don’t know what I’m doing, because I do. I absolutely do know what I’m doing. It’s just that I don’t always have the confidence to ask people to pay me for what I’m doing which will change with time. I haven’t been doing this photography thing for as long as I think I have…
