Last week while answering the many questions of “so what are you doing this week?” I would usually respond with a smirk, a laugh, and a simple phrase, “It’s Homecoming.
“Most of the time this would be received with a confused face and something like, “So, is that a big deal or… what?”. Yes. Yes it is absolutely a big deal. At my school it is probably the biggest deal there is. It’s not that there’s not a lot of partying or school spirit or alumni visits the other 51 weeks of the year, but during homecoming it’s different. Homecoming week in the AUC, Morehouse specifically, is unlike any other Homecoming on the planet. There’s really not a way to put it into words. For once the small and relatively quiet campus is transformed. Tents and vendors line the streets across from a statue of the college’s most prominent figure, Martin Luther King Jr. Everything just feels different during homecoming week.
It’s an unmatched week full of pageantry, fellowship, and more alcohol than there should be. But that’s part of the fun, isn’t it.
